Pay what you are, and you become what you pay; fail to pay in full, and the sky of your Ke darkens first. Nine ageless Ke-Masters keep watch over their own tribute periods, noble houses of the ten ranks of title snap and bite at one another beneath the lamp, and common folk care only whether there will be light tomorrow. You step into this ledger of payments from some corner of the ring, and it will soon be clear whether the little you carry in hand is enough to cover one night's light.
